The SPACE programme for OCD: How does it help?

If your child is struggling with anxiety or OCD, you may find yourself doing everything you can to help them feel better. This often includes reassurance, avoiding triggers, or helping with routines.


The SPACE Programme (Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions) offers a gentle, effective way to support your child—by focusing on what you can do as a parent.


What is SPACE and how does it help?

SPACE is a parent-led approach designed to support children with anxiety and OCD.

Rather than asking your child to change straight away (which can feel overwhelming), SPACE works by helping you make small, supportive changes that gradually reduce anxiety over time.


How SPACE supports your child (through you)


1. Responding with empathy first

SPACE helps parents lead with understanding. You’ll learn to:

  • Acknowledge feelings: “I can see this is really scary for you”

  • Stay calm and supportive without reinforcing the fear

This helps your child feel heard and understood, rather than dismissed.


2. Gently reducing “accommodations”

Many parents naturally try to ease their child’s distress by:

  • Giving repeated reassurance (“You’re not dirty, it’s fine”)

  • Helping with washing or cleaning rituals

  • Avoiding situations that trigger anxiety


In SPACE, these are called accommodations. While they come from a place of love, they can unintentionally keep OCD going.

SPACE supports you to:

  • Gradually step back from these patterns

  • Make changes slowly and compassionately—not all at once


3. Building your child’s confidence

As accommodations reduce, something powerful happens. Your child begins to learn:

  • “I can handle this feeling”

  • Anxiety rises—but it also falls on its own

This builds real confidence and resilience, rather than short-term relief.


4. Keeping your relationship strong

A key idea in SPACE is:

“We can fully support the child, without supporting the OCD.”

You’re not withdrawing support—you’re standing beside your child in a different, more helpful way.


How SPACE connects with ERP and ACT

SPACE works particularly well alongside other evidence-based approaches like ERP (Exposure and Response Prevention) and ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy).


  • ERP helps children face fears gradually and resist compulsions.


    SPACE supports this by helping parents step back from behaviours that might accidentally reinforce those compulsions.


  • ACT helps children learn to tolerate difficult thoughts and feelings, rather than trying to get rid of them.


    SPACE mirrors this by encouraging parents to respond with acceptance:


    “I can see this is hard, and I believe you can cope.”


Together, these approaches create a consistent message:👉 We don’t need to eliminate anxiety for your child to move forward—we help them face it with support and confidence.


A simple example


Instead of: “Okay, let’s wash your hands again so you feel better.”


SPACE would guide you towards: “I know your hands feel dirty and that’s really uncomfortable. I’m here with you, and I believe you can get through this feeling.”
