Attachment and Early Trauma
Some children experience early relational stress or disruption. This might include separation, loss, inconsistent care, or experiences that have felt overwhelming for them.

These early experiences can impact a child’s attachment, shaping how they:
-
Feel about themselves and others
-
Respond to closeness and connection
-
Manage big emotions

You might be noticing:
-
Strong emotional reactions or difficulty calming
-
Challenges with trust or relationships
-
Controlling, avoidant or oppositional behaviour
-
Sensitivity to change, separation or transitions

Sometimes parents describe feeling:
-
“Pushed away” by their child
-
Unsure how to respond to big emotions
-
Concerned about their child’s emotional wellbeing

How I support children and families
I offer specialist support for children experiencing attachment difficulties and emotional regulation challenges, using approaches such as Dyadic Developmental Psychotherapy (DDP) and Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT).
This means:
-
Supporting your child to feel safe, understood and accepted
-
Working with both child and parent/carer where helpful
-
Strengthening connection, trust and emotional security

Using play and creativity
For many children, talking directly about feelings can feel too much.
Through play and creative therapy, children can:
-
Express emotions in a way that feels safer
-
Begin to process their experiences
-
Build emotional awareness over time
This may include art, storytelling, imaginative play and other creative approaches, depending on your child’s needs. This works well in person and online.

A compassionate, relationship-based approach
At the heart of this work is the understanding that behaviour is communication.
Together, we gently explore what your child may be feeling underneath, helping them—and you—feel more connected, confident and supported.

If you’re looking for support with your child’s emotional wellbeing or attachment difficulties, you’re very welcome to get in touch.
